The pain cannot be seen by stealth. It migrates,
moved by storm, by force, the tyranny of
the boat’s belly that held them, flag and stone,
for the crossing, dividing fire from flame,
to set them down on shore to scrabble worth
and bargain. Tumult, New York, Florida,
the blinding glare. My God, the sun so hot,
corners worn to sharpness. Pain’s constellations,
its web of pearls, forming a beacon, a plot
to lead them here, home, to migrate smaller
distances, to the agony of losing.
But the old ways. Breath-close, like tattooed skin,
the shtetls still near. These nervous systems,
bellies burning bright as stars over the Atlantic,
as stars.
